SINGAPORE FASHION RULES! - BY TAFF
Singapore Fashion Rules! is a branding campaign initiated by Textile & Fashion Federation (Singapore) TaFf to raise the profile of Singapore designers and label. Besides staging a fashion show, TaFf initiated retail promotion at the stores levels to have the collection made available to the local consumers and tourists.

This year, in celebration of Singapore fashion, consumers can once again see the latest exciting collections from MU and PIMABS, both past Singapore Fashion Week contestant winners and 2 up and coming young labels FruFru & Tigerlily and FurrMUSE.

MU Label by Alfie Leong targets the young working adults with his fusion of both east and west through unconventional designs. In this show, he experimented with electric colours like Orange, Yellow and Blue complemented with tones of Grey and Black. As the models strut their stuffs with coloured wigs and electro beats pumping, it was an eye candy to watch. With the unique cuts of men's wear elements (such as fedora hats) being paired up with draping, he has definitely made a statement of his own. The MU statement.

As a sartorial reciprocation, FurrMUSE ("for (the) muse") surfaced in 2005 to clothe, care and celebrate the man that lives for every artist. One of the upcoming young labels in Singapore, FurrMUSE opened its show thinking about a chic Pete Doherty in mind. Tailored pieces were reinterpreted in the colour palette of White, Black, Grey and Red, giving men's wear a whole new meaning. Pants that were cut just at the ankle and over the knee was spotted in the collection as it pairs off with high cut shoes. Now no one is disagreeing with you wearing pants that doesn't fit your length. A couple of casual pieces was also pulled off (such as hoodies and beanies) in the collection. it was a marriage of casual and chic in the history of men's wear.

Set up by Cheryl Tan and Jasmine Tuan, both media design trained fashion designers. FruFru & Tigerlily has always been inspired by imagery conjured by music and every collection put out thus far has been directly inspired by music and moments in the lives of Team FruFru & Tigerlily. And it was no exception for this show too.

Think vintage, hippy, rock, chic, and indie. The collection features baby doll dresses, jumpsuits, vintage fabrics made into uptown girl magnet. With the occasional splashes of red in cool colours, the show was energetic and electrifying. Like a song, every piece of the collection has a title, likewise every collection has an 'album' title.

Past Singapore Fashion Week contestant winner, PIMABS stayed true to its forte by giving tailored men's wear intricate detailing, rich colours and patterns and materials. With its unique overalls inspired suit and half suit, the show was full of surprises. Tops are basic item embellished with Indian-Chinese influence prints were widely used as lining and trimmings. While evening pieces feature black on black complete with scarves and other accessories. Stand out from the crowd with this one of a kind pieces from PIMABS.

As the Singapore Fashion Festival comes to an end with the CK show at 8pm, we were proud to present the fashion world on what Singapore fashion is all about, as majority of the shows were by Singaporean designers, many which includes Tan Yoong and Thomas Wee who were legends in the Singapore fashion industry. We hope that the next Fashion Festival in 2009 will still continue to celebrate Singaporean designers and welcome them to the international stage of fashion along with fashion capitals.

BLUEPRINT 2008 - SFF 2008 REPORT
By Ashikin Hashim

WHAT happens when the muses of 6 fashion and 7 product designers integrate? Well, you're sure to get an outburst of creativity with works that transcend art boundaries. That was certainly achieved at the Blueprint 2008 show by the DesignSingapore Council held on Wednesday.

The cross-collaboration saw the likes of Nic Wong (of NICHOLAS) and Jarrod Lim (jarrod lim design) along with Chia Wei Choong (of ANTEBELLUM) and P.C.Ee (of EXIT design) showcasing their works on the runway. The stage was transformed into a majestic kaleidoscope of colours - bright blue, red, orange and finally pure white in the form of Ben Wu (TIAN) and Jason Ong (JIENSHU)'s Tian & The Bride Chair. The finale was met with a round of applause by the crowd, undoubtedly impressed by the multi-dimensional transformations by Singapore's very own young designers.

Following their showcase at the Singapore Fashion Festival 2008, Blueprint 2008 will travel to the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile 2008 (Milan International Furniture Fair) from the 16 of April 2008. To see this awe-inspiring collaboration, head down to the Samsung Flagship Store at VivoCity from 10 to 28 April.

SOMETHING GROWING - QIU HAO
By Ashikin Hashim

PASTEL tones and immaculate knots made its debut at QIU HAO's "SOMETHING GROWING" showcase in Singapore on Sunday, one of the Fashion Festival's feature events this year. Creatively reinforcing leather, lambskin, lyocell to wool and cotton into his designs, Qiu did not disappoint with his debut at the show.

Gold, silver and sheer bronze was a sight to expect and the notions were indeed achieved. From neatly assimilated set pieces - semi-transparent black blouses, disco-fused skirts with an added touch of glitter to leather cover-ups that suited Qiu's trademark knots to detail - to shiny, black strap stiletto pumps that were made to fit every outfit. To top it off, he was bold enough to enforce a pastel and highly samurai-inspired hairdo for the models. Lyocell, a type of fiber made from wood pulp cellulose, was also given a nifty twist in Qui's collection.

With the eco-approach he has taken to his designs, the Shanghai-born designer has definitely inducted himself into RecycloFashion's list of Designers to Look Out For this year.
